Brucella is the cause of brucellosis also known as undulant fever and Malta fever. Brucellosis is a systemic febrile illness in humans that can be caused by multiple strains of Brucella. Transmitted by consumption of infected meat, unpasteurized dairy or contact with infected animals, the bacteria enter through mucosal membranes. Symptoms include fever, anemia, weakness, headaches, depression, sweating, and muscular and bodily pain. Untreated, it can lead to chronic infection mostly in the bones and joints. Treatment generally consists of intramuscular injections and oral antibiotics.
