Cutaneous Leishmaniasis the most common, resulting in skin sores at the bite site, which can take months to a year to heal. Cutaneous Leishmaniasis can lead to any of the three other forms.
Diffuse Cutaneous Leishmaniasis is a form which produces widespread skin lesions which resemble leprosy. This form is difficult to treat.
Mucocutaneous Leishmaniasis produces skin ulcers which cause damage particularly to the nose and mouth.
Visceral Leishmaniasis also known as kala-azar or black fever is the most dangerous form, leading to swelling of the spleen and liver.
